Alphonse Mucha

(1860-1939)

Although it enjoys great popularity today, at the time when he died, Mucha’s style was considered outdated. Mucha’s works frequently featured beautiful healthy young women in flowing vaguely Neoclassical looking robes, often surrounded by lush flowers which sometimes formed haloes behind the women’s heads. The artists of the Art Nouveau style attempted to blend all the categories of art into a decorative unity based on graceful, elegant linear forms. Most of Alphonse Mucha’s works were advertisements and posters.
