Edouard Manet

(1832-1883)

Manet was a key figure in the late 19th century world of art. He had a brilliant, very visual and sketchy painting technique which involved the use of large areas of flat color; he especially liked to use a lot of black. Manet’s aim was to liberate artists from the doctrines of academicism and literary subjects. He was an artistic rebel and a very important figure in the transition from Realism to Impressionism.

Key artwork: Olympia, 1863
