Egon Schiele

Schiele’s intense and distorted images are uncompromising in their expression of human feeling. Deeply affected by Sigmund Freud’s explorations of the unconscious, Schiele’s work gave form to his own anxieties and insecurities. His career was brief but prolific and many of his works are sexually explicit. The acute nervous intensity of his style has made him one of the most important Expressionist painters, although he never formally identified himself with the movement. Even today his work can still extract a genuine gasp or even shock just like 100 years ago.
