George Stubbs

(1724-1806)

George Stubbs was primarily an anatomist and is most well-known as a master of painting horses. His depictions of horses came from hours of observation and scientific study – he even examined their bone and muscle structure which is why the artworks are so precise and realistic. His paintings, however, are not mere scientific studies as they show a masterful understanding of design and composition.
