Gustave Courbet

(1819-1877)

Courbet was heralded as the champion of new, anti-intellectual type of art that was free from the shackles of academic history and religious painting. He chose large-scale subjects and often produced physically large paintings. His technique is gutsy with thick, physical paint. Courbet was an important influence on Edouard Manet and the Impressionists.
