Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

(1864-1901)

Most of his subject matters are the Paris cafes and brothels where he used to sit and commemorate their inhabitants in artworks of supreme quality. Toulouse-Lautrec used very thin layers of paint, mostly because he painted while being on the same location and that reflects through his work. One feels like he was a part of that world and not just a simple observer. He was one of the first artists to create posters for advertising.

Key artwork: At the Moulin Rouge, 1892-95
