Thomas Gainsborough

(1727-1788)

Gainsborough was not an academic painter. His intuitive sense of style and colour, and superb handling of paint, makes him one of the artistic geniuses of 18th century Europe. Even though he was mostly known for his portrait paintings, his true passion lay in painting the British countryside. His landscapes are imaginary, lyrical and poetic.
