  • Description

    Georges Seurat (1859-1891)

    Movement: Pointillism

Although Seurat lived a short life he was the main figure and originator of a small movement called Pointillism. The characteristic of this art style is to paint separate dots of pure color on the canvas which mix and vibrate to the eye and are intended to give the same sensation as light itself. He painted according to worked-out theories and not what he saw or felt. Some of his paintings have hidden symbolism in them.

Key artwork: A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, 1884-86
