    ABOUT THE ARTIST

    Grant Wood (1891-1942)

    Movement: Regionalism (Realism)

Wood was accused of satirizing Midwestern values but he insisted that he made the work as homage to the down-to-earth, Puritan dignity found in small-town America. Wood was part of the Regionalism movement which was a form of Realism common in North America. It was based on the desire that American artists should end their cultural dependence on Europe by finding inspiration in their local surroundings. His crisp, firmly delineated and precisely modeled style was derived from the Gothic and early Renaissance masters.

    Key artwork: American Gothic, 1930
