    Diego Rodríguez Velázquez (1599-1660)

    Period: Baroque

Velázquez is one of the greatest Spanish painters of all time. He had a deeply sensitive appreciation of character. His paintings are characterized by freely painted harmonies of color and tone and a unique blend of realism with atmosphere. Pay attention to grand poses, characters and costumes as well as his use of seductive colors. He was often too realistic in his work. Velázquez makes mysterious use of space, which has the effect of drawing the viewer into the picture.
