    ABOUT THE ARTIST

    Eugène Delacroix (1798-1863)

    Period: Romanticism

Delacroix was the leader of the French Romantic movement in painting. He was willing to shock with strong subject matter and vigorous style which he often did. He chose big romantic subjects where the underlying theme is heightened emotion. For him, the color was the main means of expression. In Delacroix’s paintings there is no specific point of focus – what keeps the eye moving is the use of color and light. He also really loved rich materials and texture. He was much inspired by Rubens‘ use of color and his loose brushwork as well as by the landscapes of John Constable.
