    Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919)

    Movement: Impressionism

Even though he is considered to be an impressionist, he very soon developed his own un-Impressionist style. Renoir had a very distinct and instantly recognizable way of painting women – with pinkish skin and blushed cheeks. He painted from life, his friends assisted him. His works have a seductive, sensual and soft-focus quality to them. With his characteristic rainbow palette, Renoir painted over 6000 canvases of women, children, flowers and fields.

Artist’s Quote: “There is something in painting which cannot be explained, and that something is essential. You come to nature with your theories, and nature knocks them all flat.”
