    Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890)

    Movement: Post-Impressionism

The most interesting fact about Vincent van Gogh is that he only sold one painting during his lifetime – a fact hard to fathom knowing how popular and loved he is today. He never studied painting and only took it up at the age of 27 after many unsuccessful careers. His style is instantly recognizable – with hard and swirling brush strokes, strange perspectives and a thrilling use of color, almost like a child’s drawing. He was a painter who loved nature and could see pure beauty in simple things; he stated that he would rather paint trees seen from a window than imaginary visions. Just like another great post-impressionist artist Paul Gauguin, van Gogh also used color symbolism in his work and yellow is especially significant.
