    ABOUT THE ARTIST

    Titian (c. 1487 – 1576)

    Period: High Renaissance

Titian was the best master of the Venetian School and some might argue that he was also the greatest painter of High Renaissance and of all time. His imaginative powers reached their zenith in the interpretation of ancient legends and classical myths. He had a miraculous ability in the use of rich colors and luscious paint. In his paintings he very convincingly showed tragedy, comedy, realism, poetry and drama. Titian was a genius at creating a psychological relationship between figures. During his later years his style developed a very free handling which almost resembles the Impressionist painting style in their rendering of color and light.

Key artwork: Venus and Adonis, 1553
