ABOUT THE ARTIST
Paul Cézanne (1839-1906)
Cezanne was a very influential artist, considered by many to be the father of modern art. He worked in the transition period between Impressionism and post-impressionism, however his style is closer to post-impressionism. He achieved his style by combining the direct studies of the landscape with a classical sense of form. In all his works he combined a remarkable faithfulness of what he observed with a deep awareness of his emotional response. The reduction of nature into simple geometric shapes and his use of bold colors influenced the works of the cubists and fauves. One of Cezanne’s favorite and most often painted subjects is the mountain of St. Victoire.
