    ABOUT THE ARTIST

    Edvard Munch (1863-1944)

    Movement: Expressionism

The frenetic energy and simmering passions of his intense paintings made Edvard Munch the founder of a style of Expressionism where emotive distortions and exaggerated colors are used to achieve maximum expressiveness. His work is full of isolation, rejection, sexuality and death, but at the same time he had a rare ability to portray very intimate emotions in a universal way. Munch’s compositions are simple and balanced, the color combinations are intense. He had a particular and almost obsessive interest in human eyes.

Key artwork: The Scream, c. 1893
