    ABOUT THE ARTIST

    Claude Monet (1840-1926)

    Movement: Impressionism

Monet is considered to be the father and leader of Impressionism. His experiments with paint, color and light formed a starting point for abstract art. He was fascinated by light and often painted the same objects dozens of times under different lighting conditions. As all impressionists, he painted from real life. His painting “Impression: sunrise” gave the name to the whole Impressionism movement. The new style was challenging and modern in his day. Thick and crusty paint, intricate texture and the interweaving of paint and color are all characteristics of his work.

Key artwork: The Japanese Bridge series
