    Movement: Abstract Art/Expressionism

    Wassily Kandinsky became one of the first and greatest pioneers of pure abstract painting. His earliest works are closer to Expressionism however later on his work became fully abstract. Kandinsky is claimed to possess a rare phenomena called synesthesia which gave him the ability to hear colors. He founded the Russian Academy and the Russian influence in his work can be seen in his references to icons and folk art.
