    Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902)

    Movement: Hudson River School

Albert Bierstadt was a German-born American artist who was a member of the Hudson River School. He painted large-scale landscapes of the American West with a low view point and in great detail. His compositions are convincing and his use of light – very neat. He was a master of creating romantic visions of the American wilderness before the industrialization and railway systems partly destroyed it.

Artist’s Quote: “The magnificent beauty of the natural world is a manifestation of the mysterious natural laws that will be forever obscured from us”

Key artwork: Among the Sierra Nevada Mountains, California, 1868
