    J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851)

    Period: Romanticism

Turner is probably the most well-known artist of the Romantic period. He was well ahead of his time. He had the ability to depict nature in all its various moods. He had a never-ending interest in light and its physical qualities, especially when painting the sun. His work in watercolors and oils captures the magical effects of light, color and movement in pale glowing colors. Turner showed a particular interest in the conflict between the elements. He was heavily influenced by Claude Lorrain who was his favorite artist. He very often painted ships and boats in the sunset.

    Key artwork: A Mountain Scene
